Tiny, single-celled microbes living in the drain line receive energy to live from the wastes that enter the drain line. They secrete enzymes that break down oil, grease and other organic matter into molecules that can be absorbed through the microbe's cell wall. Cell material is mainly composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. Carbon is supplied by the oil and grease in the drain line. Hydrogen and oxygen are supplied by water. Usually the nutrients in short supply are nitrogen, phosphorus or both.
