Keep Your Horses Healthy

Breathing ammonia gas can negatively affect the health of adult horses and especially foals. Adult Horses. An article written by Tracy Williams, in Equus Caballus, winter 2005/2006 edition, cites reasons why ammonia is hazardous on your horse’s health. As little as 10 ppm of ammonia for 5 to 7 weeks can cause dysfunction of the horse’s mucus membranes, which decreases immune response and makes the horse susceptible to other pathogens. According to Susan J. Holcombe, PhD, mucus accumulation is positively correlated with poor racing performance.

Foals. Spending much of their time on or near the stall floor, foals are at higher risk for ammonia exposure. This is very unfortunate as ammonia’s effects are exacerbated in foals, according to Frederick Harper, PhD an extension horse specialist for the University of Tennessee. He states that approximately 15 percent of all foals suffer a severe respiratory disease before they are one year old, although most occur between 2 to 6 months. Young foals have immature respiratory system, so they are increasingly susceptible to disease. This makes ammonia reduction all the more crucial.

For stalls up to 12 x 12 feet: Strip stall of old bedding. Sprinkle 8 to 12 oz of AgriFresh™ on top of the entire soil or mat. Apply a layer of bedding. Apply a second 8 to 12 oz of AgriFresh™ on top of the bedding. Add 2 to 4 oz weekly onto the bedding. Continue to remove manure and heavily soiled areas of bedding. Add new bedding as needed.
